If the purchase price is above face value, the bond trades at a premium. Below face value, it trades at a discount. Equal to face value means it trades at par. Discounted bonds have a YTM higher than the coupon rate; premium bonds have a YTM lower than the coupon rate.
Current yield only considers the coupon payment relative to price and ignores capital gain or loss at maturity. YTM accounts for both the coupon income and the difference between purchase price and face value, giving a more complete picture of total return.
The YTM formula used here is a widely-used approximation, accurate to within a fraction of a percent for most bonds. The exact YTM requires solving for the discount rate that sets the present value of all cash flows equal to the price (an iterative calculation).

This is the amount the issuer repays you at maturity — usually a round number like $1,000 for corporate bonds or a larger denomination for government bonds.

A realistic discount-bond calculation, step by step
Suppose you're considering a bond with a $1,000 face value, currently trading at $950, with a 5% annual coupon rate paid annually, and 10 years remaining to maturity.
Explanation: Because the bond trades at a discount ($950 versus $1,000 face value), its YTM of 5.64% is higher than its 5% coupon rate — you're being compensated with a built-in capital gain on top of the coupon income. Notice current yield (5.26%) sits between the coupon rate and YTM: it captures the price discount's effect on income yield, but not the eventual $50 capital gain at maturity, which is why YTM is the more complete figure for comparing bonds priced away from par.
Premium comparison: If the same bond instead traded at $1,050 (a premium), current yield would drop to 50/1,050 ≈ 4.76%, and YTM would fall further to roughly [50 + (1,000−1,050)/10] / [(1,000+1,050)/2] = 45/1,025 ≈ 4.39% — below the coupon rate, because you're paying extra today for a face value repayment that's actually lower than your purchase price.
What current yield and YTM actually tell you relative to the coupon rate
Comparing YTM to the coupon rate is a quick way to read a bond's price status without checking the price field directly — the relationship is always consistent.
